Open Water Swimming continues to grow in popularity and now you can try this out at Fairhaven Gardens! This session will show you how to assess the safety of open water swimming, conduct a safe entry to the water and be able to swim away from the jetty and back again. You will also be introduced to one or more specific open water skills, depending on time and swimmer progress, and have an opportunity to practice these. These skills can include, sighting, turning around a buoy and drafting.
The session is suitable for anyone who has never swum in open water before, or anyone who has a fear of open water. Note: This is a practical session where you will be swimming in South Walsham broad. To take part in the session you must be able to swim at least 400m in a pool environment without any assistance.
The following kit is required to be able to take part in the session:
A swimming costume/ trunks and swim hat. You should also bring a towel and warm clothes to put on after the session.
Notes on other kit:
- A wetsuit is not necessary but this can help insulate you a little from the cold water, provide a degree of buoyancy and give you more confidence.
- A tow float is not essential but will make you more visible and can help to give you more confidence in the water.
- Please note there are NO changing facilities. You should be comfortable in getting changed on the grass area next to the broad. A dry robe or other form of changing garment is recommended.
Are you in good hands: Your coach is Simon Edwards who has been a level 3 triathlon coach since 2007. Simon is a leading figure in the development of open water swimming in Norfolk. Initially running sessions for triathletes, and then youth programmes for Swim England East. Simon also went on to open the regions first bespoke open water swim centre in 2009 and with this, gradually increased the popularity of the sport over the next 10 years, through coaching sessions, events and regular swim sessions. Simon is still involved in running open water swim sessions for Swim Engand East's youth swimmers preparing them for competition.
Please allow at least 20 minutes to get to the broads and arrive promptly to give yourself enough time to change or prepare before the session starts.
